Varkhart
Task
Create a no-nonsense retail brand with a strong sense of humour. Develop patterns and merchandise (including underwear, T-shirts, caps and hoodies) that fit the brand voice and allow the every-day man to wear them with confidence.
Inspired by a well-known catchphrase from founder Rikus de Beer (RadioRaps), we set out to create a logo and brand system that is bold, humorous and instantly recognisable. The icon was designed around the idea of a vark (pig), with a heart placed at its centre allowing the brand name to be visually understood even without the wordmark. From there, we developed a flexible brand system with multiple logo and icon applications and a suitable colour palette to suit different types of merchandise.
We designed 15+ patterns specifically for the underwear range, as well as graphics for T-shirts, hoodies, website artwork, and the brand’s initial social media posts, ensuring a cohesive and recognisable visual language across all touchpoints. The colour palette and patterns for Varkhart were designed to be bold, playful and instantly memorable. The primary colours – maroon and pink (think bacon and pink pig illustrations) – is complimented by the secondary palette created to provide flexibility across applications.
